Description: I created this painting because I wanted to convey what the career of an independent artist can feel like at times. The life of a working artist although filled with excitement and flavor, is also filled with doubt and risk. When an artist is making his or her living off of what they create and sell, there is an element of anxiousness that never quite goes away.This anxiety gets amplified in those times where the artist hits a creative block, making it feel like a maze that has no exit. There have been many times over the last 20 years where I’ve had to jump and just hope that I would land on my feet. However, most of the time it’s the worry before the jump that causes more pain then the actual landing. Over time and through experience I’ve adjusted to the chaos and chance of it all, and know that the chips will fall where they will.
This painting represents that struggle and the courage its takes to keep attempting to make one's living off of art sales. Many artists can’t handle the lifestyle, and over time their art slides back onto the back burner becoming more of a hobby than their career. They choose more stable and consistent employment. I’ve tried that a few times and it just doesn’t work for me. I feel as if I was put on this earth to express myself while being an ambassador for the imagination.I dedicate this painting to all the struggling and working artists in our world who haven't given up making their art first priority. I can’t
think of anything more gratifying than making one’s life based around what we feel and think. Our imaginations and dreams are what make life tolerable.
